Kilkeel Burial Banks

COULD the only marked grave at Kilkeel’s historic Burying Banks belong to one of the men who lost their lives during the construction of the Silent Valley dam?
That’s the question local historians Gabrielle Keown and Catherine Hudson are keen to find an answer to.
The Burying Banks are the final resting place for many paupers who died at the Kilkeel workhouse, including those who perished during the Great Famine of the 1840s.
The two women are anxious to ensure the neglected burial site does not become a forgotten part of Kilkeel’s past.
Earlier this year Gabrielle wrote a letter to the Mourne Observer calling on the ‘powers that be’ to consider some sort of monument to those buried there.
“Surely these unfortunate people deserve some dignity,” Gabrielle wrote. “A simple stone suitably engraved in their honour would suffice, with a pathway for local people or tourists to access the memorial.”
Newry and Mourne District Council has agreed a monument should be erected and a meeting is scheduled to take place today (Wednesday, November 21) to decide how to take the memorial project forward.
Gabrielle, whose maiden name was Rushe, now lives in Newcastle but she was born and brought up in Kilkeel and remembers childhood days spent playing at the Burying Banks.
During a recent visit she managed to locate and uncover a headstone, which is thought to be the only one in the graveyard.
The headstone is weather beaten, but Gabrielle says the name at the top appears to be ‘James Behan.’
“Underneath is written ‘In remembrance from his fellow workers’,” Gabrielle explained.
“I remember when I was growing up the legend was that this man was killed in the Silent Valley,” she added.
Last year a memorial was erected to nine men who lost their lives during the construction of the Silent Valley and Ben Crom reservoirs.
One of the names on the memorial is a Jimmy Baines, a night watchman who is believed to have fallen to his death in the dark on the reservoir site.
Despite repeated efforts, Water Service officials were unable to trace any of Mr Baines’ relatives.
At one stage it was thought he was a native of Wales who came to Mourne in search of work, but appeals in the Welsh press and on Welsh radio proved fruitless.
But if Mr Baines had no known relatives at the time of his tragic death, and did not come from the Mourne area, the Burying Banks might have been seen as the most appropriate place to bury him.
It is widely believed that others buried there came from outside Mourne.
While many in the overgrown graveyard died destitute and alone, night watchman Jimmy Baines would have made friends and acquaintances during his time as a worker on the dam and indeed the inscription on the headstone suggests the dead man’s headstone was erected by his colleagues.
His circumstances could explain why a gravestone marks his burial plot, while others lie buried in unmarked graves.
The theory runs into trouble because the surname on the headstone is ‘Behan’ whereas the name on the memorial at Silent Valley is ‘Baines’.
Although spelt very differently, the two names sound almost exactly alike when said aloud, however.
It is just possible, therefore, that James Behan and Jimmy Baines is the same person but the surname has been spelt incorrectly on the gravestone or perhaps the memorial at Silent Valley.
